Since the word 'sustainable' is becoming more and more important (and is set to become even more of a focus next year), it's a good time to flag that you will most likely see a lot more florists start saying that they are a sustainable florist. Don't just take their word for it! What are they doing that makes them a sustainable florist? Ask the question! Buying only locally grown blooms doesn't make a florist sustainable. Yes, this is a great way to becoming more eco-friendly but it isn't enough (imo) to call yourself a sustainable florist.
What does it mean to really be a sustainable florist?
Nature based - a fully sustainable florist looks to nature first. Nature inspires. It's our job to protect her and guide our clients to make better choices.
Mechanics - a truely sustainable florist will not use any flower foam in any situation. A lot of florists will say that you can't create beautiful wedding designs and installations without using floral foam...yes you can! It takes more planning and thinking but it can absolutely be done! Get creative! It's the use of floral foam that is unsustainable! It's a microplastic made from petrochemicals. Don't be fooled by the use of 'biodegradable' floral foam either as it can be worse than the standard floral foam due to the chemicals going into the water faster making it toxic. Even pouring waste water down the drain from an arrangement that has contained floral foam is like pouring it into the natural environment (making for some very sad marine life).
Buying local and in season - the slow flower movement has key principles, buying locally grown and in season florals is one of them. Local and in season blooms require less travel tme, less heating /cooling requirements in general
Packaging and waste - a sustainable florist will work with local growers who trade straight from the garden to the bucket and with no wrapping in between (unless absolutely necessary). Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Sydney Flower Market as much as the next business owner but far out there is some packaging!
Chemicals - does your florist deal with growers who use chemical pesticides?
People - unfortunately there are still workers in the flower supply industry suffering and not being given a fair go. If you buy flowers from another country and they're cheap you need to ask yourself why they are so affordable...
